FKUI sedang melakukan penelitian riset terbaru mengenai Covid-19 di Indonesia yang berkolaborasi dengan RS Persahabatan, RSPAD Gatot Subroto, RS Sanglah Bali, dan RS Mattaher Jambi yang diharapkan dapat bermanfaat bagi masyarakat Indonesia. FKUI juga merencanakan untuk membuat berbagai macam klinik, epidemiologi dan pengem- bangan vaksin Covid-19.
Departemen Kimia Kedokteran FKUI, Klaster Bioinformatics Core Facilities IMERI-FKUI, Klaster Drug Development Research Center IMERI -FKUI, dan Fakultas Farmasi UI, bekerjasama dengan Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) dalam penelitian terkait pencarian antivirus Covid-19. Berdasarkan hasil skrining aktivitas ratusan protein dan ribuan senyawa herbal terkait mekanisme kerja virus SARS-CoV-2 terdapat beberapa senyawa yang berpotensi menghambat dan mencegah virus tersebut antara lain: hesperidin, rhamnetin, kaempferol, kuersetin, dan myricetin yang terkandung dalam daging buah jambu biji berwarna merah muda, kulit jeruk, dan daun kelor. Penemuan tersebut merupakan tahap awal dan diperlukan penelitian lebih lanjut. Dekan Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Indonesia (FKUI), selaku Koordinator AHS UI, Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, SpPD-KGEH, MMB dalam Konferensi Pers Daring : “#FKUIPeduliCOVID19; Laboratorium Mikrobiologi Klinik dan Kimi Hand Care” mengatakan bahwa makanan tersebut hanya sebagai suplemen, bukan sebagai obat.
Diharapkan bahwa penelitian selanjutnya dapat menemukan bahan herbal apa saja yang berpotensi sebagai pengobatan di masa depan. Penemuan tersebut juga diharapkan dapat bermanfaat bagi masyarakat untuk mencegah dan meningkatkan daya tahan tubuh dari serangan virus Covid-19.
