Welcome to Ice City: Russia plans to build frozen community 1,
000 miles from North Pole… as race for Arctic minerals heats up

Russia is to build an ultra-modern city on a frozen island deep inside the Arctic Circle – in the Kremlin’s latest move to back its claim to vast oil and gas reserves under the
polar ice cap.
Named Umka, after a popular Soviet polar bear cub cartoon hero, the initial 5,000 residents will live under a vast dome to protect themselves from temperatures sinking below minus 30C in winter.
‘This city will be of strategic importance as Russia’s northern outpost,’ said architect Valery Rzhevskiy
who has shown its modernistic designs to an approving Vladimir Putin.
Extraordinary: The city will cost up to £4 billion and be built on the remote island
of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago, some 1,000
miles from the North Pole
Vast: The Umka designs are based on the International
Space Station but in comparison is much larger – one mile long and
800 yards wide
Sources say it is likely to house soldiers, border guards
and secret service officers, as well as scientists and explorers,
as Moscow gets serious about claiming Arctic mineral riches.
All will enjoy a luxury lifestyle in the cocoon with its own specially regulated temperate climate – including many facilities to make inhabitants of other cities envious.
‘We aim to have scientific laboratories, houses, but also parks with attractions, an Aqua complex, hotels and a cathedral.
Naturally there will be schools, kindergartens, recreation zones, a hospital, and sport
facilities are planned, too,’ said Rzhevskiy.

‘We want people who will be living and working here
not to realise they are in some closed space with an aggressive Arctic climate outside.’
The extraordinary venture – nicknamed ‘wonder city’ – will be built at a cost of up to £4 billion on the remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago ,
some 1,000 miles from the North Pole, closer
than any other Russian city.
Strong winds make it one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing point.
Bleak: Strong winds make the area one of the most inhospitable places on the

The Umka designs are based on the International Space
Station, but it is vast by comparison – just short of one mile long and 800
yards wide.
‘So far it’s the only project in the world with an artificial climate and integral life support – just like on the space station. Not only is
it a new word in architecture, but in human living too.
We have used aero and space technologies while creating it.’

Electricity will be supplied by a floating nuclear power station. Food wise, it will be totally self-sufficient with fish and poultry farms,
greenhouses, a wheat processing factory and bakeries.
‘There will not be any rubbish at all, as the city will have two factories converting all kinds into ashes.’
It will house workers for local mines and oil platforms which should pay the costs of the development,
it is claimed.
‘This project is designed to work on any surface, even on the Moon if
needed,’ said Rzhevskiy, one of Russia’s top architects.
The ice city plans – currently with no fixed timetable for
opening – comes as all countries with territory touching Arctic waters are
gearing up to make competing demands to the United Nations over underwater mineral exploitation rights.
Western countries were stung when in 2007 Russian polar explorer Artur Chilingarov placed his
country’s flag in the Arctic seabed in 2007.
‘We must prove the north pole is an extension of
the Russian land mass,’ he said at the time.
A Canadian think tank this year even warned that ‘an arms
race maybe beginning’, expressing concerns at the
risk of conflict.
The U.S., Canada, Norway and Russia have all boosted
their naval presence in Arctic waters amid
warnings of a Cold War that could literally be cold – except perhaps
at Umka.

Heavy security presence in some Kurdish cities

Oil workers join protests, social media reports say
(Adds activists calling for mass protests, analysts comment)
By Parisa Hafezi
DUBAI, Oct 10 (Reuters) – Iranian security forces intensified a crackdown on anti-government protests in several Kurdish cities on Monday,
as demonstrations elsewhere in Iran spread into the country’s vital energy sector.
Protests have swept Iran since Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old from Iran’s Kurdish
region, died on Sept. 16 while being held for “inappropriate attire”, marking one of the
boldest challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution.
While university students have played a pivotal role in the protests with dozens of universities on strike, unconfirmed
reports on social media showed workers at Abadan and Kangan oil refineries
and the Bushehr Petrochemical Project had joined in.
Iran’s oil ministry was not immediately available to comment.
A combination of mass protests and strikes by
oil workers and Bazaar merchants helped to sweep the clergy to power in the Iranian revolution four decades ago.
However, analysts said that Iran’s clerical rulers will likely contain the unrest for now, and
prospects of the imminent dawn of a new political order are slim.
A video on Twitter showed dozens of workers had blocked the road to the Bushehr petrochemical plant, in Assaluyeh on Iran’s Gulf coast,
chanting “Death to the Dictator”.
Tensions have been especially high between authorities and the Kurdish minority which human rights groups say has long been oppressed –
a charge the Islamic Republic denies.
Human rights group Hengaw reported a heavy presence of armed security forces in the Kurdish cities of Sanandaj, Saqez and Divandareh on Monday.
It said at least five Kurdish residents were killed and over 150 injured in protests since Saturday.
Videos shared on social media showed protests in dozens of cities across Iran early
on Monday, with fierce clashes between protesters and riot
police in cities and towns across Amini’s native Kurdistan province.
Iranian social media postings urged for mass protests on Wednesday.
The Iranian authorities have blamed the violence on an array of enemies including armed Iranian Kurdish
dissidents, with the Revolutionary Guards attacking their bases in neighbouring Iraq a number of times during the latest unrest.
“READY TO DIE”
Iran has a track record of putting down unrest among its more
than 10 million Kurds, part of a Kurdish minority whose aspirations
for autonomy have also led to conflicts with authorities in Turkey, Iraq
and Syria.
Heavy gunfire could be heard in several videos shared
on Twitter by the activist 1500tasvir. A video showed several explosions creating blinding flashes in a neighbourhood of Sanandaj, the capital of the Kurdistan province.
Activists said on social media that several people, including two teenagers,
were killed by security forces in the province.
Reuters could not verify the videos and posts.
Unfazed by teargas, clubs, and, in many cases, live ammunition used by the security
forces, according to rights groups, protesters across Iran have
persist with demonstrators burning pictures of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for the downfall of the clerical establishment.
At least 185 people, including 19 minors, have been killed, hundreds injured and thousands have been arrested by security forces,
according to rights groups. Blaming the protests on Iran’s foreign foes,
authorities said “rioters” have killed at least 20 members of the security forces.
School girls across Iran have joined the protests, videos on social media showed.
“Hey world, hear me: I want a revolution. I want to live freely and I am ready to die for it,” said
a 17-year-old protester in a central Iranian city, whose name
and location could not be revealed by Reuters due to security concerns.
“Instead of dying every minute under this regime’s repression, I prefer to die with their (security forces) bullets in protests for freedom.” (Writing
by Parisa Hafezi; Editing by Tom Perry, William Maclean and David Evans)

Javier Bardem has responded to the criticism over his being Spanish and playing Cuban American actor Desi Arnaz.
The 52-year-old Oscar winner stars in the movie Being The Ricardos opposite Nicole Kidman who plays sitcom icon Lucille Ball.
‘I’m an actor, and that’s what I do for a living: try to be people that I’m not,’ Javier told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview.
Answering back: Javier Bardem has responded to the criticism over his being
Spanish and playing Cuban American actor Desi Arnaz; seen last
week in LA
Javier also argued that the flak over nationality tends to be aimed
in particular at non-native English speakers like himself.
‘What do we do with Marlon Brando playing Vito Corleone?
What do we do with Margaret Thatcher played by Meryl Streep?
Daniel Day-Lewis playing Lincoln? Why does this conversation happen with people with accents?’ he said.

‘You have your accent. That’s where you belong.
That’s tricky. Where is that conversation with English-speaking
people doing things like The Last Duel, where they were supposed to be French
people in the Middle Ages? That’s fine.
But me, with my Spanish accent, being Cuban?’
He added defiantly: ‘What I mean is, if we want to open the can of worms, let’s open it
for everyone. The role came to me, and one thing that I
know for sure is that I’m going to give everything that I have.’
Profession: ‘I’m an actor, and that’s what I do for a living: try to be people that I’m not,’ Javier told The Hollywood Reporter;
he is pictured as Desi
The husband of Penelope Cruz joked: ‘We should all start not allowing anybody to play Hamlet unless they
were born in Denmark.’
After his interview he emailed the publication and qualified his earlier remarks: ‘I do recognize that there are many underrepresented
voices and stories that need to be told, and we should collectively do better to provide
access and opportunities for more American Latino stories and storytellers.’
As Javier was slated for playing a Latino despite not being
one, Rachel Zegler has received opprobrium for supposedly
being the wrong type of Latina to play Maria in West Side Story as she is of Colombian and Polish descent rather than Puerto Rican.
Javier and Nicole were both controversial choices for their roles when they were cast as Lucy and Desi, whose
daughter Lucie Arnaz publicly defended Nicole.
Incoming: The 52-year-old Oscar winner stars in the movie Being The Ricardos opposite Nicole Kidman who
plays sitcom icon Lucille Ball
The blowback they received was so intense that they both apparently tried
to extricate themselves from the film as a result.
Although the producer Todd Black was able to persuade their agents to keep them in,
Nicole and Javier still wanted the film postponed a year.
Nicole said that once their attempts to finagle a delay were unsuccessful ‘then it was like: “Oh, no. Oh, no. We actually have to do this.”‘
Since both Nicole and Javier grew up abroad they were unaware of how proprietary Americans felt about Lucy and
Desi and so were unprepared for the backlash.
There he is: The real Desi Arnaz, who had a turbulent marriage to Lucille that ended in divorce, is
pictured in 1954 during the run of I Love Lucy
Aaron himself has previously defended casting Javier in the midst of controversy about his not
being Latin American.
‘First of all, Amazon’s casting department had a Latina casting consultant on board.
I found out, for instance, because there was an actor who I was considering who’s Brazilian, and I was
told by the casting consultant that Brazilians aren’t considered [Hispanic] because they speak Portuguese,’ he told the Hollywood Reporter.
‘So, Javier is Spanish and the casting consultant
was fine with it. But I don’t want to use the casting consultant as cover.
I want to tell you my opinion on this and I stand by it, which
is this: Spanish and Cuban aren’t actable, OK? They’re not actable. By the way, neither
are straight and gay,’ he added.
‘Because I know there’s a small movement underway that only gay actors should play gay characters.
Gay and straight aren’t actable. You could act being attracted to someone, but most nouns aren’t actable.’
Film history: Javier argued: ‘What do we do with Margaret Thatcher played by Meryl Streep?’ asking:
‘Why does this conversation happen with people with accents?’
Meanwhile as rumors of Nicole’s casting began to spread
this January it set of a swirl of online chatter about who would be better
suited for the role.
Debra Messing, who had just starred in a homage to I Love Lucy
on the last season of Will And Grace, began aggressively pitching
herself for the part on Twitter.
However Lucie posted a Facebook video urging fans to ‘stop arguing about who should
play it – she doesn’t look like her, her nose isn’t the same, she isn’t as
funny.’
She noted that the film is ‘the story of Lucille Ball,
my actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo, and her husband Desi Arnaz, my
dad, not Ricky Ricardo.’
New work: ‘Where is that conversation with English-speaking people doing
things like The Last Duel, where they were supposed to be French people in the Middle Ages?’ Javier asked
Desi, who played Lucy’s bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo on their program, had a tumultuous marriage to her in real life.
She filed for divorce for the first time in 1944, reportedly over his philandering and drinking,
but they got back together before splitting up permanently in 1960.
In the meantime they produced two children and the sitcom that
etched them into TV legend, running from 1951 to 1957.
Throwback: Despite their divorce, in which she called their marriage ‘a nightmare,’ Lucy
and Desi remained publicly amicable for the rest of his life;
they are pictured while married
They also starred in movies together throughout their marriage, including Forever, Darling and the
Vincente Minnelli comedy The Long, Long Trailer.
Despite their divorce, in which she called their marriage ‘a nightmare,’ Lucy and Desi remained publicly
amicable for the rest of his life.
Lucy married Borscht Belt comic Gary Morton in 1961 and stayed with him until her death in 1989, while Desi married one Edith Hirsch in 1963.
Edith and Desi both died of cancer one year apart – she passed on in 1985 and her husband, who loved cigars from his native
Cuba, succumbed to lung cancer in 1986.
Aaron Sorkin’s new biopic is about a single week spent making
an episode of I Love Lucy during which Lucy and Desi’s marriage is
shaken.
The turbulent week, reportedly running from the table read to the taping in front of a studio audience, is said to include a professional landmine
for the couple as well.

BERLIN, Dec 22 (Reuters) – A reduction in managers’ bonuses
at Volkswagen will lead to a 10% pay cut for the next two years,
the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported on Sunday, after the German carmaker struck a deal
with unions to axe jobs and scale back production.
The reduction will apply to May bonus payments,
leading to the 10% pay cut in 2025 and 2026 for
4,000 managers, the newspaper said. In the following three
years, their pay will fall by 8%, 6% and 5%, it added.
A spokesperson for Volkswagen declined to comment on the report.
Representatives of the IG Metall union and the company’s employee works council could not immediately be reached
for comment.
Volkswagen, Europe’s top carmaker, announced sweeping changes on Friday
to its German operations, including more than 35,000 future job cuts
and sharp capacity reductions in the deal reached with unions
after days of gruelling talks.
The agreement sought to avert mass strikes at the company, whose troubles have highlighted a broader slowdown in German industry.

In the world of entertainment and risk, few activities offer the
thrill and excitement quite like gambling. From the glitzy casinos of Las Vegas to the convenience of online platforms, gambling
has become a global phenomenon, captivating millions with its promise
of fortune and adventure. In this comprehensive review,
we delve deep into the multifaceted world of gambling, exploring its history, psychology,
legality, risks, and rewards.
A Brief History of Gambling
Gambling has a rich and diverse history that spans cultures and civilizations.
From ancient civilizations like the Mesopotamians and Egyptians who played dice games,
to the Chinese who invented card games, gambling has been an integral
part of human society for millennia. Throughout history, gambling
has evolved and adapted to societal changes, from the establishment of
formal casinos in Europe to the rise of online gambling in the digital age.
The Psychology of Gambling
At its core, gambling taps into fundamental aspects of human psychology,
including risk-taking behavior, reward anticipation, and the thrill of uncertainty.
The allure of gambling lies in the potential for a big win, which triggers the brain’s reward system and
releases dopamine, creating feelings of pleasure and excitement.
However, gambling also carries inherent risks,
as the thrill of winning can quickly spiral into addiction for some individuals.
Understanding the psychological mechanisms behind gambling can help individuals make informed decisions and
recognize the signs of problem gambling.
Types of Gambling
Gambling comes in many forms, each offering its own unique experience
and appeal. From casino games like blackjack, poker, roulette, and slot
machines to sports betting, lottery games, and online gambling platforms like Betition.de for Betiton slots, there is no
shortage of options for those looking to try their luck.
Each type of gambling offers its own set
of rules, strategies, and odds, providing something for every taste and preference.
Gambling And Betting
While gambling and betting are often used interchangeably, there are subtle distinctions between the
two terms. Gambling typically refers to the activity of playing games of chance
or participating in activities where the outcome
is largely determined by luck or random chance. This
can include casino games such as roulette, slot machines, or card games like poker, as
well as lotteries and scratch cards. On the other hand, betting typically involves placing a wager
on the outcome of a specific event or contest.
This could include sports betting, where individuals bet on the outcome of sporting events like football
games or horse races, or political betting, where people wager on the outcome of elections or other political events.
Betting also extends to non-sporting events such as award ceremonies, reality
TV shows, or even the weather.
In essence, gambling encompasses a broader range
of activities that rely primarily on chance, while
betting specifically involves predicting outcomes and placing wagers on the results of events or contests.
However, the line between the two can sometimes blur, as both activities involve
risking money on uncertain outcomes in the hopes of winning more.
The Legality of Gambling
The legality of gambling varies widely from country
to country and even within different regions of the same country.
While some jurisdictions have strict regulations and prohibitions against gambling,
others have embraced it as a source of revenue and tourism.
In recent years, there has been a trend towards liberalizing
gambling laws, with many countries legalizing and regulating online
gambling to capture tax revenue and protect consumers.
However, the legality of gambling remains a complex and contentious issue in many parts of the world.
Risks and Rewards
Gambling offers the tantalizing prospect of wealth and success, but it also carries significant risks.
For every big winner, there are countless others who lose money and suffer
financial, emotional, and psychological consequences.
Problem gambling, characterized by compulsive behavior and an inability to control one’s gambling habits, affects millions of people
worldwide and can lead to financial ruin, relationship problems, and mental health issues.
Responsible gambling practices, such as setting limits, knowing when to quit,
and seeking help when needed, are essential for mitigating these risks and ensuring a positive
