Javier Bardem has responded to the criticism over his being Spanish
and playing Cuban American actor Desi Arnaz.
The 52-year-old Oscar winner stars in the movie Being The Ricardos opposite Nicole Kidman who plays sitcom icon Lucille Ball.
‘I’m an actor, and that’s what I do for a living:
try to be people that I’m not,’ Javier told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview.
Answering back: Javier Bardem has responded to the criticism over his being Spanish and playing Cuban American actor Desi Arnaz; seen last
week in LA
Javier also argued that the flak over nationality tends to be
aimed in particular at non-native English speakers like himself.
‘What do we do with Marlon Brando playing Vito Corleone? What do we do with Margaret
Thatcher played by Meryl Streep? Daniel Day-Lewis playing Lincoln? Why does this conversation happen with
people with accents?’ he said.

‘You have your accent. That’s where you belong. That’s
tricky. Where is that conversation with English-speaking people doing things
like The Last Duel, where they were supposed to be French people in the Middle Ages?
That’s fine. But me, with my Spanish accent, being Cuban?’
He added defiantly: ‘What I mean is, if we want to open the can of worms, let’s open it for everyone.
The role came to me, and one thing that I know for sure is that I’m going to give everything that I have.’
Profession: ‘I’m an actor, and that’s what I do
for a living: try to be people that I’m not,’ Javier told
The Hollywood Reporter; he is pictured as Desi
The husband of Penelope Cruz joked: ‘We should all start not allowing
anybody to play Hamlet unless they were born in Denmark.’
After his interview he emailed the publication and qualified his earlier remarks: ‘I do recognize that there are many
underrepresented voices and stories that need to be told, and we should collectively do better to provide access and opportunities for more American Latino stories and storytellers.’
As Javier was slated for playing a Latino despite not being one, Rachel Zegler has received opprobrium for
supposedly being the wrong type of Latina to play Maria in West Side Story as she is of Colombian and Polish descent rather than Puerto Rican.
Javier and Nicole were both controversial choices for their
roles when they were cast as Lucy and Desi, whose daughter Lucie Arnaz publicly defended Nicole.
Incoming: The 52-year-old Oscar winner stars in the movie Being The
Ricardos opposite Nicole Kidman who plays sitcom icon Lucille Ball
The blowback they received was so intense that they both apparently tried to
extricate themselves from the film as a result.
Although the producer Todd Black was able to persuade their agents to
keep them in, Nicole and Javier still wanted the film postponed a year.
Nicole said that once their attempts to finagle a delay were unsuccessful ‘then it was like:
“Oh, no. Oh, no. We actually have to do this.”‘
Since both Nicole and Javier grew up abroad they were
unaware of how proprietary Americans felt about Lucy and Desi and
so were unprepared for the backlash.
There he is: The real Desi Arnaz, who had a turbulent marriage to Lucille that
ended in divorce, is pictured in 1954 during the run of I Love Lucy
Aaron himself has previously defended casting Javier in the midst of controversy about his not being Latin American.
‘First of all, Amazon’s casting department had a Latina casting consultant on board.
I found out, for instance, because there was an actor who I was considering who’s Brazilian, and
I was told by the casting consultant that Brazilians aren’t considered [Hispanic] because they speak
Portuguese,’ he told the Hollywood Reporter.
‘So, Javier is Spanish and the casting consultant
was fine with it. But I don’t want to use the
casting consultant as cover. I want to tell you my opinion on this and I stand by it, which is this:
Spanish and Cuban aren’t actable, OK? They’re not actable. By the way,
neither are straight and gay,’ he added.
‘Because I know there’s a small movement underway
that only gay actors should play gay characters.
Gay and straight aren’t actable. You could act being attracted to
someone, but most nouns aren’t actable.’
Film history: Javier argued: ‘What do we do with Margaret Thatcher played by Meryl
Streep?’ asking: ‘Why does this conversation happen with people with accents?’
Meanwhile as rumors of Nicole’s casting began to spread this January it set of a swirl of online chatter
about who would be better suited for the
role.
Debra Messing, who had just starred in a homage to I Love Lucy on the last season of Will And Grace, began aggressively pitching herself
for the part on Twitter.
However Lucie posted a Facebook video urging fans to ‘stop arguing about who should play it – she doesn’t look like her,
her nose isn’t the same, she isn’t as funny.’
She noted that the film is ‘the story of Lucille Ball, my
actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo, and her husband Desi Arnaz, my dad,
not Ricky Ricardo.’
New work: ‘Where is that conversation with English-speaking people doing things like
The Last Duel, where they were supposed to be
French people in the Middle Ages?’ Javier asked
Desi, who played Lucy’s bandleader husband Ricky Ricardo on their program, had a
tumultuous marriage to her in real life.
She filed for divorce for the first time in 1944,
reportedly over his philandering and drinking, but they got back
together before splitting up permanently in 1960.
In the meantime they produced two children and the sitcom that etched them into TV legend, running from 1951 to 1957.
Throwback: Despite their divorce, in which she called their marriage ‘a
nightmare,’ Lucy and Desi remained publicly amicable for the rest of his
life; they are pictured while married
They also starred in movies together throughout their marriage, including
Forever, Darling and the Vincente Minnelli comedy The Long, Long Trailer.
Despite their divorce, in which she called their marriage ‘a nightmare,’ Lucy and Desi remained
publicly amicable for the rest of his life.
Lucy married Borscht Belt comic Gary Morton in 1961 and stayed with him until
her death in 1989, while Desi married one Edith Hirsch
in 1963.
Edith and Desi both died of cancer one year apart – she passed on in 1985 and her husband, who loved cigars
from his native Cuba, succumbed to lung cancer in 1986.
Aaron Sorkin’s new biopic is about a single week spent making an episode of I Love Lucy during which Lucy and Desi’s marriage
is shaken.
The turbulent week, reportedly running from the table read to the taping
in front of a studio audience, is said to include a professional landmine for
the couple as well.

Aaron Finch wants the aspiring openers in Australia’s limited-overs squad to assume
nothing, declaring that he and David Warner are
no certainties to open at this year’s World Cup.
The impending return of suspended superstars Warner and Steve Smith have resulted in much uncertainty
about Australia’s likely batting order for the 50-over tournament that is being hosted
in England.
Finch and Warner, having opened together during Australia’s march to the 2015 World Cup
title, were fully expected to reunite at the top of the order.
But the captain, speaking as his side prepared
to start their series in India that is a key tune-up for
this year’s World Cup, has made it clear that is no fait accompli.
“Whatever we feel is the right combination at the time. I don’t think anything is out of question,” Finch told
reporters.
“There’s things you can juggle around in one-day cricket. I’ve batted in the middle order a little bit over the last little while, Davey has done it.
“It’s a huge opportunity for guys to step up and almost cement their
place, for the next little while.”
Finch also pointed to the fact that Warner and Smith, whose bans expire next month, are both recovering from elbow surgery.
“That should be in the back of your mind as well, that if things don’t go 100 per
cent right with their rehab or they have some complications with it and they’re not back in time (for
the World Cup),” he said.
Warner’s year-long ban has left an undeniable void at the top of Australia’s order in all formats; Alex Carey, Chris Lynn, Travis Head and D’Arcy Short have all been trialled as Finch’s partner.
Carey and Short headline the contenders to open alongside Finch in Vizag, where Australia’s tour of India starts with a T20 that begins at 1230am AEDT on Monday, while Usman Khawaja and Marcus Stoinis also have strong claims.
Carey and Khawaja shape as Finch’s most likely opening partners during the ensuing ODI series in India, which will double as a selection showdown as Australia move closer to finalising their 15-man World Cup squad.
Former opener Matthew Hayden, who is in India for commentary duties, was on deck at Saturday’s training session to pass on some pointers to Carey and other batsmen in the squad.
“It was great to have JL’s (Justin Langer’s) great mate
and a legend of the game, and somebody who has had so much
success in India, come back and get around to a few of the boys,” Finch said.
AUSTRALIA’S ODI OPENING PARTNERSHIPS DURING WARNER’S SUSPENSION:
*Aaron Finch & Alex Carey (8, 8, 20) *Finch & Chris Lynn (1) *Finch & Travis Head (12, 4, 60, 101, 7) *Head & D’Arcy Short (27, 24).

The former Hear’Say popstar was bundled up from the cold wearing
a dark green hoodie and black tracksuit bottoms as she was swabbed by for the virus.
Myleene was also joined by her two daughters Ava, 13, and Hero, nine, at Thursday’s training session, after she revealed she had ‘the fear’
about competing on the show.
The mother-of-three shared clips of her talented daughters on the ice
alongside skating professional Lukasz Rozycki, who
Myleene will be dancing with during the upcoming series.
Talented: The TV presenter, 42, was joined by her two young daughters Ava, 13, and Hero, nine,
at her Dancing on Ice training session on Thursday
An adorable video on her Instagram Stories sees both of her daughters perfect an effortless spin on the ice with the coaching of Lukasz, 40.
She even joked that she was ‘training up my body doubles’ and would ‘slip’
her talented daughters in her place and just hope that nobody would notice.
Myleene’s youngest daughter Hero proved she had nerves of
steel as, in another short clip, Lukasz grabbed her by one arm and one
leg, lifting her into the air while spinning around
in circles.
Hero, who apparently loves talking about Lukasz at home, grinned in delight
during the impressive manoeuvre.
Alongside the video, Myleene penned: ‘All Hero talks about at home is “Mr Lukasz”.’
The two mini Dancing On Ice skaters appeared to enjoy the time practicing with their mother, even trying to copy Lukasz’s awe-inspiring spin on one leg.
Spinning around: Myleene’s daughter Hero was
lifted into the air during an impressive manoeuvre by skating professional Lukasz Rozycki, Myleene’s dancing partner in the series
Myleene could be heard groaning and saying ‘oh stop’ in the background as both the skating professional and her daughters show off
their incredible talents.
Taking to Instagram Stories, she wrote: ‘Lukasz is the best at keeping the kids entertained.’
Myleene has previously revealed her daughter’s love for ice skating,
saying she is normally the one that holds the coats when she takes her daughter’s dancing.
Announcing that she would be joining Dancing On Ice in September, she said that she
wanted to make Hero and Ava ‘proud’ on the show.
She told her fans: ‘Guess who won’t be holding the coats at the side of the
rink anymore! I am so, SO excited to be joining the
cast of Dancing On Ice.
‘My girls have always wanted me to do this but I’ve always been too scared someone will skate over my fingers!
‘Anyway, I want to make them proud and show them I’m up
for a challenge when completely out of my comfort zone but most
of all, I want a bum like Jlo!’
Earlier this week, the smooth FM host admitted she was feeling
‘dishevelled’ and ‘had the fear’ because some of her competitors were more
advanced than she was.
Myleene urged her followers not to ‘put their money’ on her, as
she practiced her skating skills ahead of the show’s launch early next year.
Speaking to the camera on her Instagram Stories,
Myleene said: ‘Okay I’m all dishevelled I’ve
just come off the ice.
‘Oh man, I’ve got the fear today! I don’t normally get this cos I really think paddle
your own canoe, don’t worry what anyone else is doing.
Dancing: The smooth FM host admitted she was feeling ‘dishevelled’ and ‘had the
fear’ because some of her competitors were more advanced than she was
‘But I found out that while I’m trying to learn to stand people are practicing jumps,
only me and Denise [Van Outen] are starting from scratch. They’ve been skating since they were kids.’
It was revealed recently that Denise will be skating with Matt Evers, after he surprised her during a performance of her show
Proud Cabaret to share the news.
Offering an explanation for her wobble, Myleene added: ‘Anyway I’ve just got the fear today.
I think I’m tired because the baby was up all night feeding.’
She went on to give her fans a tip on who they
should be backing in the competition, saying: ‘Don’t put your money on me… put it on Colin Jackson.’
Myleene shares her two daughters with her ex-husband Graham Quinn,
who she separated from in 2013.
Family: Myleene recently got engaged to Simon Motson, the father of her son Apollo.
She also shares two daughters Hero, nine,
and Ava, 13, (all above) with her ex-husband Graham Quinn
Her exciting skating challenge comes soon after she revealed he had
got engaged to the father of her one-year-old son Apollo, Simon Motson.
The TV star was astounded when her partner of five years
popped the question with a nine-carat diamond ring
on the fifth anniversary of their first date.
Dancing On Ice will return to ITV in the new year and see twelve celebrities skate live with their professional partners each week.
The duos will try to impress both the panel and
the viewers, who will ultimately decide who is crowned the winner of the show.
On joining the show, Myleene said: ‘I have a 13-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old daughter who are obsessed
with ice skating.
In the same boat: Myleene revealed she and Denise
Van Outen (above) are the only two celebrities who are starting skating completely
from scratch in the upcoming show
‘They both ice skate and I stand there and
I hold the coats. That’s my role – to tie the shoelaces and hold the coats.
Now it’s my turn to learn and I can’t wait!”
Other stars already confirmed for the show include
Billie Faiers, Faye Brookes, and Jason Donovan.
Musician Lady Leshurr, British Olympians Colin Jackson and Graham Bell,
and radio host Sonny Jay have also all been announced for the upcoming season.
Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby once again return to present the show and the expert panel of Torvill and Dean, John Barrowman and
Ashley Banjo will all resume their roles as judges.

Swiss vote to impose world’s strictest rules on executive pay after public
outcry over fat cat bonuses

Swiss citizens have voted to impose some of the world’s strictest
controls on executive pay.
Early returns in a referendum revealed 68 per cent backed plans for shareholders to veto executive
pay and for a ban on big rewards for new and departing managers.
The clear majority came as a surprise given fierce opposition and intense
campaigning by business lobby group Economiesuisse, which warned
the proposals will damage the country’s competitiveness and scare
away international talent.
Support for the move was sparked by anger over the big bonuses blamed for fuelling risky investments that nearly felled
Swiss bank UBS, as well as outrage over a proposed $78 million payment to outgoing Novartis chairman Daniel Vasella.
Claude Longchamp, of pollsters Gfs.Bern, said the public outcry last
month that forced Novartis to cancel Vasella’s ‘golden goodbye’
helped drive the campaign.
The Swiss vote for stricter rules on execuitve pay was sparked by outrage
over a proposed $78 million payment to outgoing chairman of drugs company Novartis Daniel Vasella (pictured)
‘It emotionalised and it mobilised,’ he said.
Thomas Minder, the businessman-turned-politician behind the campaign, says his proposals are aimed at ending a culture of
short-termism and rewards for managers of badly-run companies rather than just capping salaries.

Despite threats from some executives, Switzerland is unlikely to see an exodus of big companies who have previously been drawn to the country by low taxes,
stable politics and business-friendly laws.
And companies will seek ways around the new rules to reward
executives, just as banks in Europe are looking to soften the impact of a
cap on bonuses for top staff agreed by European politicians on Thursday.
The Swiss vote comes as the European Union tries to
push through a proposal which will mean bankers bonuses will
be capped at a year’s pay and a perk of two years’ salary could only be paid if a majority of shareholders agreed to it.
Downing Street said Prime Minister David Cameron had ‘real concerns’ about
the plans and warned it must not be allowed to
stifle Britain’s role as a global banking centre.
Chancellor George Osborne (left) is expected to argue against the European Union’s plans to cap bankers’ bonuses
at a year’s pay. Prime Minister David Cameron (right) said he had ‘real concerns’ about
the plans
The deal must be signed off by EU governments before coming into force next
year but Chancellor George Osborne is expected to argue against it at a meeting of
European finance ministers next year.
Boris Johnson joined the chorus of British opposition, branding the plans ‘deluded’ and ‘self-defeating’.
The London Mayor warned it would simply play into the hands of the
City of London’s overseas.
Mr Osborne is expected to try to block the plans, claiming it would prevent City firms hiring
the best staff, prompting an exodus of top
talent to New York.
The deal must still be signed-off by EU governments before coming into force in 2014 but the UK is struggling to
convince other countries it is a bad idea.
If Britain loses its showdown with Brussels, it would mean the most draconian clampdown on fat cats’ perks since the financial crisis of 2008.
Swiss companies accounted for five of the top 10 best-paid
chairmen in Europe in 2011, but only the heads of Novartis and Roche made
it into the continent’s top 10 for chief executives.
While anger at multi-million dollar payouts for executives has spread around the globe since the financial crisis, the Swiss system of direct democracy means populist proposals
have a greater chance of implementation.
Swiss citizens get to vote on a range of topics in up to four national
referendums each year.
A few other countries, including the United States and Germany,
have introduced advisory ‘say on pay’ votes in response to anger
over inequality and corporate excess.
Britain is also planning to give shareholders a binding vote
on pay and ‘exit payments’ at least every three years.
The near collapse of flagship bank UBS in 2008 stoked anger among Swiss who blamed its heavy losses on rewarding
bankers to make risky bets
Thomas Minder’s initiative in Switzerland forces
binding votes on compensation every year as well as on board composition and would also
ban bonus payments to managers if their companies
are taken over.
The plan also includes possible jail sentences and fines for breaching the new rules.
While Switzerland has fared relatively well through the financial crisis, the near collapse of
flagship bank UBS in 2008 stoked anger among Swiss who
blamed its heavy losses on rewarding bankers to make risky
bets.
Last year, more than one third of UBS shareholders rejected the bank’s plans for
executive pay – including a 4 million franc signing-on fee for new German chairman Axel Weber – after a sub-par 2011
profit and a $2 billion rogue trading scandal.
The centre-left Social Democrats are already pushing for another referendum on even tougher curbs on executive pay – they want to limit the annual compensation of top
managers to just 12 times that of their lowest-paid worker.

This week Mr Chetiyawardana posted a message on social media
in which he explained that the bar will soon be ‘killed off’ and reborn on the same site
with the same team but as a reinvented concept.
Overall, London celebrates 10 bars on the 2018 list, welcoming four newcomers – Scout (No.28), Three Sheets (No.29),
Swift (No.46) and Coupette (No.18), which also wins the Best
New Opening Award, sponsored by Thomas Henry.
Connaught Bar (No.5) also receives the Heering Legend
of the List title, which recognises the bar that has performed most consistently over
the 10-year history of the list. Last year’s
No.1, American Bar at The Savoy, now claims the No.2 position, while established London destinations including Bar Termini
(No.6), Oriole (No.17) and Happiness Forgets (No.35) also remain on the list.
The US boasts 10 bars on the list with The NoMad (No.4) in New York crowned Best
Bar in North America sponsored by Michter’s Distillery, for the second consecutive
year. New York’s Dante cracks the top 10,
climbing seven places to No.9, while Employees Only jumps 11 places back to No.26.

These dramatic pictures show terrified passengers
being evacuated from a plane that was about to
leave Glasgow Airport but suddenly became filled with
smoke.
At least 20 were injured in the incident this morning, where the pilot of a Jet2 aircraft bound for Alicante
in Spain was forced to abort its take-off.
Four people were taken to hospital and another 13 people received treatment at the scene for minor injuries, after the evacuation at 7.40am.
In a shaky video filmed by one of the 189 passengers, several people are shown sliding down the
plane’s inflatable exit chutes.
Scroll down for video
Scary: Passengers, including a woman in green, were forced
to slide down the Jet2 plane’s emergency chute but some may have been injured in the process, bottom right
The video hears the plane’s alarms ringing out and some screaming while the
person filming says simply ‘this is crazy’ and tells people sliding down to be careful.
Many of the people injured were hurt as they left the plane, and some may have clattered into eachother when going down the chutes, Jet2
has admitted.
Passenger Stephen McFadden said ‘people started running’ as the
737’s pilot shouted ‘get out get out after carrying out an emergency
stop.

‘We were careering up the runway and smoke started belting out
of all the air vents with a smouldering smell,’
he said.
‘Then the brakes went on and the emergency chutes went out and we were all evacuated.
Evacuation: This Jet2 plane, stranded on the Tarmac at
Glasgow Airport, was about to take-off when smoke was detected in its cabin, forcing a mass evacuation
‘I have a nine-week-old daughter and a four-year-old daughter.
I had my nine-week-old attached to my chest as I went down the emergency chute and my wife had our four-year-old and
was in tears.
‘It was like something out of a movie. There was panic, people started
running and I shouted ‘slow down’, and then the pilot shouted “get out, get out”.
“It was just sheer panic, something no-one would want to go through again.”
Fellow passenger Graham Divers, 40, a businessman from Glasgow,
said: ‘We were going full throttle down the tarmac when me and
the chap sitting next to me saw smoke swirling above our heads.
‘He said he thought he saw it coming from the right engine.
‘I didn’t know what to do, so I was about to shout to the cabin crew when the pilot obviously sussed
it.
‘He slammed the brakes on really hard and put the engines into reverse.
‘There was a stunned silence when we stopped, everyone was in shock.
‘The captain called the cabin crew into the cockpit
and a few minutes later yelled ‘evacuate, evacuate’.
‘The crew were brilliant. They ushered us onto the wing.
I was a little worried because I could smell aviation fuel.
Evacuation: The incident involving a Jet2 plane (file picture) caused the closure of the Scottish
airport
‘The captain should be praised because I looked back and he was running up
and down the cabin to make sure everyone else was off before him.
And then afterwards he came round to us all to make sure we were all right.
‘I saw at least a dozen people being treated by paramedics with breathing masks
and a woman twisted her ankle and I saw a couple of pensioners being
taken away in an ambulance.
‘I am a frequent flier and I have never experienced
anything like it.
TENERIFE-BOUND PLANE FORCED TO LAND AFTER SMOKE ON BOARD
A passenger plane has made a safe emergency landing
at Dublin Airport today after crew detected smoke in the cockpit.
The Thomas Cook flight touched down at about 9.40am, a spokeswoman for the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA)
said.
The plane was en route from Manchester to Tenerife.
‘The aircraft was en route from Manchester. There was a report of smoke in the cockpit,’ the spokeswoman said.
All 323 passengers have been evacuated from the
plane.
The DAA’s full emergency response was put into action and backed up by
at least a dozen fire and ambulance crews from across Dublin as a precaution.
‘I think we were all in shock when it was all happening. It was only afterwards that people began to
shake and realise exactly what had happened.’
Alan Masterton, who was with his wife Sandra, said: ‘The flight safety drill had been done and we were off on the runway when almost straight away the
cabin started to fill up with smoke.
‘I think it’s everybody’s worst nightmare on a plane. It was absolutely terrifying.’
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: ‘We removed four casualties
who were taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.’
At least 12 flights were unable to take off from Glasgow and a number of others have been diverted to Edinburgh.
Managing director of Jet2 Ian Doubtfire travelled to Glasgow from the company’s Leeds base to talk to staff and deal with the incident.
He said: ‘During the very early part of the take-off, smoke was seen in the aircraft and the cabin crew informed
the captain and he stopped the take-off.
‘I’ve talked to the crew extensively about what happened and they
said that the exit from the aeroplane was textbook.
‘Obviously, they do a lot of training for this and
they said that it was done in the required time, as you have to evacuate quickly with smoke on board.’
Mr Doubtfire said injuries when evacuating an aircraft via chutes are common.
‘It is possible to get injured when evacuating quite fast,’ he said.
‘People often stop at the bottom and others may come and slide into them or whatever, but all
the chutes operated normally and the evacuation was textbook.’
He added that the passengers onboard the flight will still be able to travel to Spain today.
‘We have asked the passengers if they wish to travel to Alicante and most of them want to
do so, so we are arranging an aircraft to come and collect them this afternoon and leave around 3pm.’
Disruption: Flights were cancelled, delayed or diverted because of the incident
A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said this morning: ‘We are currently dealing with an ongoing
incident at Glasgow Airport involving a 737 aircraft following reports of smoke within the cabin.
‘Emergency services are in attendance and the passengers
have been evacuated as a precaution.
‘One elderly woman sustained a minor injury leaving the
plane.
‘Inquiries are ongoing.’
A statement from Jet2 said: ‘This morning’s flight LS177 from Glasgow Airport to Alicante made an emergency stop on the runway just prior to take-off.
‘The aircraft was forced to curtail take-off due to smoke in the cabin.
‘All 189 passengers have disembarked the aircraft.’
Airport bosses said they had to close the runway.
A spokesman from Glasgow Airport said: ‘Flight LS177 from Glasgow Airport to Alicante was forced to
make an emergency stop on the runway just prior to take off.
The 737-800 Jet2.com aircraft was forced to curtail take off due to smoke in the cabin.
‘All 189 passengers were disembarked. Glasgow
Airport had to suspend flights until 10am when the runway was reopened.
This has resulted in delays and passengers are
advised to check with their airlines.’

Welcome to Ice City: Russia plans to build frozen community 1,000 miles from North Pole…
as race for Arctic minerals heats up

Russia is to build an ultra-modern city on a frozen island deep inside the Arctic
Circle – in the Kremlin’s latest move to back
its claim to vast oil and gas reserves under the polar ice cap.
Named Umka, after a popular Soviet polar bear cub cartoon hero, the
initial 5,000 residents will live under a vast dome to protect themselves from temperatures sinking below minus
30C in winter.
‘This city will be of strategic importance as Russia’s northern outpost,’ said architect Valery Rzhevskiy who has
shown its modernistic designs to an approving Vladimir Putin.
Extraordinary: The city will cost up to £4 billion and be built
on the remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago, some 1,000 miles
from the North Pole
Vast: The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station but in comparison is
much larger – one mile long and 800 yards wide
Sources say it is likely to house soldiers, border guards and secret service officers, as well as scientists and
explorers, as Moscow gets serious about claiming Arctic mineral
riches.
All will enjoy a luxury lifestyle in the cocoon with its
own specially regulated temperate climate – including many facilities to
make inhabitants of other cities envious.
‘We aim to have scientific laboratories, houses, but also parks with attractions, an Aqua complex, hotels and a cathedral.
Naturally there will be schools, kindergartens, recreation zones,
a hospital, and sport facilities are planned, too,
‘ said Rzhevskiy.

‘We want people who will be living and working here not to realise they are in some closed space
with an aggressive Arctic climate outside.’
The extraordinary venture – nicknamed ‘wonder city’ – will be built at a
cost of up to £4 billion on the remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk
archipelago , some 1,000 miles from the North Pole, closer than any
other Russian city.
Strong winds make it one of the most inhospitable places on the planet, and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing point.
Bleak: Strong winds make the area one of the most inhospitable places on the planet,
and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing point
The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station,
but it is vast by comparison – just short of one mile long and 800 yards wide.
‘So far it’s the only project in the world with an artificial climate and integral life support – just like on the space
station. Not only is it a new word in architecture, but in human living too.
We have used aero and space technologies while creating it.’

Electricity will be supplied by a floating nuclear
power station. Food wise, it will be totally self-sufficient with fish and poultry farms, greenhouses,
a wheat processing factory and bakeries.
‘There will not be any rubbish at all, as the city will have two factories
converting all kinds into ashes.’
It will house workers for local mines and oil platforms which should pay the costs of the development, it is claimed.
‘This project is designed to work on any surface, even on the
Moon if needed,’ said Rzhevskiy, one of Russia’s top
architects.
The ice city plans – currently with no fixed timetable for
opening – comes as all countries with territory touching Arctic
waters are gearing up to make competing demands to the
United Nations over underwater mineral exploitation rights.
Western countries were stung when in 2007 Russian polar explorer Artur
Chilingarov placed his country’s flag in the Arctic seabed in 2007.
‘We must prove the north pole is an extension of the Russian land mass,’ he said at the
time.
A Canadian think tank this year even warned that ‘an arms race maybe beginning’, expressing concerns at the
risk of conflict.
The U.S., Canada, Norway and Russia have all boosted
their naval presence in Arctic waters amid warnings of a
Cold War that could literally be cold – except perhaps at Umka.
